Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan

5

Nash Point Lighthouse, located in Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, was built in 1832 to address the tragic loss of vessels and lives due to the treacherous Nash Sands. Originally illuminated by Argand burners, the lighthouse transitioned through various lighting technologies, including paraffin 'Hood' burners and 1,500 watt electric lamps in the 1960s, before adopting a 150-watt system. The lighthouse is now automated and monitored from Trinity House's Planning Centre in Harwich, Essex, marking the end of an era with the departure of the last lighthouse keeper in 1998.

Two of the four original lighthouse keeper's dwellings have been converted into charming holiday cottages that blend historical ambiance with modern comforts. These accommodations, designed for the contemporary traveler, feature luxurious mattresses, well-equipped kitchens, and cozy sitting areas. The restoration has preserved the essence of the original structures, offering a unique experience without the distractions of Wi-Fi or strong mobile phone reception, encouraging guests to unwind and enjoy their surroundings. A landline telephone is available for emergencies.

The cottage named Stella offers generous single-storey living that includes a sitting room, a separate dining room, and a fully-equipped modern kitchen. It comprises three bedrooms: one with a king-size bed, a twin room, and a single room, complemented by a family shower room with a walk-in shower. Outside, guests can enjoy a private, enclosed gravel garden, perfect for al-fresco dining on the provided stone furniture.

Guests at Nash Point Lighthouse can explore nearby stunning beaches, many of which hold blue flag status, including Ogmore-by-Sea, Barry Island, Southerndown, and Porthcawl, which are popular for windsurfing. Cowbridge, located just over eight miles away, offers a variety of shops, boutiques, craft galleries, and excellent dining options. Additionally, the renowned Gower Peninsula and Mumbles are within reach for further exploration.

The site is also recognized as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the presence of the rare Tuberous Thistle (Cirsium tuberosum), discovered on the grounds in 1977. Stella, accommodating five guests, is available for booking, providing an opportunity to experience the natural beauty and historical significance of this unique location.
