The island has a white sandy beach named in his honor, where convolvulus flowers bloom every July and August. Eriskay is home to an excellent community shop, the Politician Pub serving fresh local seafood, and a restaurant open year-round. The island has a famous connection to the SS Politician, which ran aground in 1941 with a cargo of whisky that inspired the film Whisky Galore. Eriskay Ponies, a rare breed, roam the island, adding to its charm. The owner, an artist and photographer, lives next door and can provide information on Gaelic culture and language, while respecting guests' privacy.

The surrounding tidal waters of Eriskay are teeming with wildlife, including seals, otters, porpoises, sea eagles, and oyster-catchers.
