Sherrin

Nr Woolacombe, Devon

Bull Point Lighthouse, located near Woolacombe in Devon, has been a vital navigational aid since its construction in 1879. The lighthouse has a rich history, including 93 years of incident-free service by dedicated lighthouse keepers. However, in 1972, significant ground movement led to the collapse of part of the structure. The current lighthouse, which has been automated and is now controlled remotely, retains much of the original equipment and has facilitated the refurbishment of four cottages for modern-day visitors, blending historical charm with contemporary comforts.

The cottages at Bull Point Lighthouse are designed to provide a relaxing retreat for guests, featuring luxurious mattresses, well-equipped kitchens, and cozy sitting areas. While the fog horn was discontinued in 1988, visitors can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and take advantage of amenities like WiFi, which, although sometimes unreliable during storms, adds to the convenience of a 21st-century stay. The sympathetic restoration of the cottages ensures that they maintain the original ambiance while offering essential comforts for an authentic experience on the dramatic headland.

Guests can explore the nearby village of Mortehoe, which offers a selection of pubs, restaurants, and shops, all easily accessible on foot from the lighthouse. For those seeking a more extensive array of amenities, the popular village of Woolacombe is just 1.2 miles away, reachable via the scenic South West Coast Path. This route not only provides breathtaking views but also an opportunity to spot wildlife, including seals. Additionally, the historic town of Ilfracombe, located under six miles from Bull Point, features the largest harbor on the North Devon Coast and notable attractions like Damien Hirst's sculpture, Verity.

Among the four cottages, Sherrin stands out as the largest and is the only detached property, offering generous single-storey accommodation with sea views. It includes a spacious sitting room, a dining kitchen, and three bedrooms, accommodating up to five guests. The other cottages—Warden, Triton, and Siren—vary in size and capacity, with Warden being the smallest, ideal for couples, and Triton and Siren catering to families and larger groups. Each cottage is designed to provide a unique and comfortable experience while allowing guests to enjoy the stunning coastal landscape and rich maritime heritage of the area.
