Nr. Woolacombe, Devon

Bull Point Lighthouse, located in Nr. Woolacombe, Devon, has a rich history dating back to its construction in 1879. It served as a crucial navigational aid for vessels for 93 years until ground movement was reported in 1972, leading to a significant cliff collapse and damage to the original structures. The current lighthouse, which has been automated and is now monitored remotely from Harwich, Essex, retains much of the original equipment. This transition has allowed for the refurbishment of four cottages on-site, transforming them into comfortable accommodations for modern travelers while preserving the historical ambiance of the lighthouse.

The cottages offer a blend of historical charm and contemporary comforts, featuring luxurious mattresses, well-equipped kitchens, and cozy sitting areas. Despite its remote location, the site has access to WiFi, though it may be less reliable during storms. Notably, the fog horn was decommissioned in 1988, enhancing the peaceful atmosphere for guests, who can enjoy the scenic views of fishing boats navigating the Bristol Channel. The sympathetic restoration of the cottages ensures an authentic experience without sacrificing essential amenities.

Guests at Bull Point can explore the nearby village of Mortehoe, which offers a selection of pubs, restaurants, and shops, all within walking distance. For a broader range of dining and shopping options, the popular beach destination of Woolacombe is just 1.2 miles away, accessible via the South West Coast Path. This picturesque route leads to breathtaking views and opportunities to spot seals along the way. The historic town of Ilfracombe, located less than 6 miles from the lighthouse, features the largest harbor on the North Devon Coast and is home to Damien Hirst's iconic sculpture, Verity, as well as charming beaches and eateries.

The Triton cottage, one of the four former lighthouse keeper's homes, accommodates up to four guests and includes a sea-facing sitting room, a dining room, a fully-equipped kitchen, and three bedrooms. The layout features a king-size bedroom and two sea-facing single bedrooms, complemented by a modern bathroom with both a bath and shower. Outside, guests can enjoy shared outdoor spaces, including a garden bench and picnic-style furniture, fostering a communal atmosphere among visitors. The other cottages include Warden, Siren, and Sherrin, each catering to different group sizes and pet policies, ensuring a variety of options for guests seeking a unique coastal retreat.
