Nr. Woolacombe, Devon

Bull Point Lighthouse, located in Nr. Woolacombe, Devon, has been a significant maritime landmark since its construction in 1879. Over the years, it has aided vessels in navigating the treacherous waters of the Bristol Channel. However, in 1972, the lighthouse faced a serious incident when ground movement caused a 15-meter section of the cliff to collapse, leading to the partial destruction of the fog station and engine room. The current lighthouse, built using much of the original equipment, is now automated and monitored remotely from Harwich, Essex. This transition marked the end of the lighthouse keepers' era but allowed for the refurbishment of four cottages, transforming them into comfortable accommodations for modern visitors.

The cottages at Bull Point Lighthouse maintain the charm of the original structure while offering contemporary comforts, including luxurious bedding, fully equipped kitchens, and cozy living spaces. The restoration was done thoughtfully, ensuring that the essence of the lighthouse's history remains intact. Guests can enjoy modern amenities such as WiFi, although its reliability can fluctuate, especially during storms. Notably, the fog horn, which was a constant sound for many years, was decommissioned in 1988, allowing for a quieter stay. Visitors are encouraged to bring binoculars to observe the fishing boats navigating the channel.

Nearby, the village of Mortehoe offers a quaint atmosphere with several pubs, restaurants, and shops, all within walking distance from the lighthouse. For more extensive shopping and dining options, the popular village of Woolacombe is just 1.2 miles away, accessible via the scenic South West Coast Path. This area features a stunning Blue Flag sandy beach and opportunities for beautiful walks, including a circular route to Putsborough Sands, which offers breathtaking views and potential seal sightings. Additionally, the historic town of Ilfracombe, located under six miles away, is home to the largest harbor on the North Devon Coast and features the famous Verity sculpture by Damien Hirst.

Among the four cottages available at Bull Point Lighthouse, Warden is the smallest, accommodating two guests and one dog, making it an ideal choice for couples. It features a single-storey layout with a sitting room, separate dining room, fully equipped kitchen—including a wine fridge—and a spacious bedroom with a large bathroom that has both a walk-in shower and a bath. Outside, guests can enjoy a small private sitting area and access to a communal grassy area in front of the cottages. Other accommodations include Triton, which sleeps four guests and welcomes two dogs, and Siren, which is pet-free and accommodates five guests. Sherrin, the largest cottage, is a detached property that also sleeps five and welcomes two dogs, situated closer to the lighthouse.
