Trinity Cottage

Drewsteignton, Devon

2

Sitting at the end of a row of three cottages known as the Glebe cottages, Trinity is packed with charm and character. The accommodation is all on the ground floor, though there are small steps to the bedroom, bathroom and also to the kitchen. Inside you’ll find everything you need under the cosy thatch roof, from a small, but perfectly formed kitchen to the double bedroom and bathroom. After a bracing Dartmoor hike, curl up in front of the woodburner in the living room. There’s no garden, but with heaps of walking trails around both Castle Drogo and Dartmoor starting from the door, you won’t be short of opportunities for getting outside.

You’ll find the cottage is a wonderful base for everything this corner of the South West has to offer. Take in the Castle Drogo estate, home of the last castle to be built in England. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens who was inspired by the rugged Dartmoor tors all around, Castle Drogo’s imposing presence looks out over the valley. Alongside the dramatic castle, you’ll also discover a beautiful formal garden and incredible views over Dartmoor and the River Teign. The village of Drewsteignton where you’ll be staying has a village pub - the Drewe Arms, post office and village stores so you don’t need to go far to pick up the essentials (or have a drink or bite to eat).

Head to the scenic delights of Fingle Bridge, an arched stone bridge over the River Teign and then spend time exploring the wonderful Fingle Woods, where one of the country’s largest woodland restoration projects is based. The whole Teign Valley also stretches out beyond, perfect for walkers. Nearby Finch Foundry is home to the last set of working Victorian water-powered forge tools in England, or if you’re keen to spend more time outdoors, then Lydford Gorge with its 30m high waterfall is a great spot to watch wildlife such as fallow deer, fritillary butterflies and Dartmoor ponies. When you stay with us, funds from your holiday go towards looking after special places like Castle Drogo, where the current major conservation programme is in the final stages of making the building watertight so that future generations can continue to enjoy spending time there.
