High Hallgarth

Nr Coniston, Cumbria

7

This timeless Lakeland cottage sits alone in the landscape with views over Little Langdale Tarn and up the valley. The white-washed stone cottage dates back to the 17th-century and although it’s since been renovated, much of its original character remains. Exposed beams, slate floors and an open fire in the old range add to its historic charm. You’ll even discover a few quirkier features such as the tin bath and the earth closet in an outbuilding.

You’ll be in the heart of the Lake District with many of its highlights close by. A good place to start is Blea Tarn (Tarn is the Cumbrian word for a small mountain lake). It’s a photographers dream with its pretty Alpine flowers and views over some of the most famous fells in the Lakes, including The Langdale Pikes and Pike of Blisco.

For longer walks try low level walks around Tilberthwaite or take to the high fells of Coniston or Langdale Valley. The remote setting and lack of light pollution make it the ideal spot for star gazing.
