You’ll find charming Mohun tucked away in an idyllic setting behind the adjoining Farm House and next to Pont Creek Cottage in the tiny hamlet of Pont Quay, just off the river Fowey. The tidal creek laps quietly outside and for walkers there are footpaths to pretty fishing villages and the sandy beach at Lantic Bay.
Mohun, pronounced ‘moon’, is named after a local land owner. Inside, this compact cottage is ideal for a couple and has everything you’ll need for a comfortable stay, with a gorgeous picture window in the kitchen/sitting room looking out across the creek. Outside the door, step up into your own garden with a picnic table, or take a chair or two to the quayside and simply relax by the water. Bird lovers can look out for kingfishers and herons too.
If you’re a water baby, you’ll find that the creek is the focus of any stay at Mohun. Pont was once an important river quay with barges sailing up from Fowey to unload their cargo and to take on board produce from the farms. Nowadays it’s a popular stop on Hall Walk, enjoyed by ramblers taking in two ferry rides across the estuary. It’s also used by kayakers, paddle boarders and other small craft. You’re also welcome to launch from this private quay if you have your own boat (max. 11 foot boat length).
Once you’ve had your fill of relaxing by (or on) the water, then the bustling town of Fowey is close, and can either be reached from Polruan by passenger ferry, or by car crossing at Bodinnick. Stop off for a bite to eat at any of the fantastic places on both sides of the river, along the coast and inland. If you’re craving beach life, then the glorious beaches around Lantic Bay are also nearby. Further afield enjoy the historic National Trust properties of Lanhydrock, Cotehele and Antony and discover the old fishing towns of Looe and Polperro.
