Nestling in the lush grounds of a medieval castle, you’ll love the special setting of this cottage. With out-of-hours access straight into the castle grounds, you can stroll the award-winning gardens and extensive parkland, right from the cottage’s front door.
Ty’r Stocmon, located only a few hundred yards from Chirk Castle, literally means ‘the home of the stockman’ in Welsh and was the home of the estate’s stockman who looked after livestock on the estate. Now, this newly-renovated cottage is ideal for small families or groups of up to four friends. Inside, you’ll discover two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs, and downstairs there’s a log burner in the sitting room for warming tired limbs. Then there’s direct access from the kitchen to a large open patio and seating area. It’s the perfect space for alfresco relaxing after a day immersing yourself in tales of Welsh border history (or just running around wagging your tail – the cottage welcomes up to two dogs).
Walking trails all around the cottage will lead you through the Ceiriog Valley on the Welsh-English border and along dramatic Offa’s Dyke. The medieval fortress of Chirk Castle and its glorious gardens are literally on your doorstep. There’s also 480 acres of parkland beyond to explore (or even Segway your way round) filled with wild ponies, sheep and ancient trees, so you’ll be spoiled with outdoor adventures of all kinds.
Close to the cottage, you’ll find the pretty, historic towns of Llangollen, Oswestry and Welshpool. Chirk is the nearest town with local shops and restaurants, and an 18 hole golf course if you fancy a game. Don’t miss the incredible Chirk Aqueduct either – it’s a jaw dropping sight.
Heading further afield, you can hop across to the eastern fringes of Snowdonia National Park (less than an hour by car) where we’re helping to maintain 2.5 miles of critically-eroded footpaths. When you come to stay, the funds from your holiday go towards essential conservation work like this at the places we look after.
Self-catering cottage holidays in the UK and Ireland can still be a green option. You can have the comforts of home and the flexibility to do what you want; when you want - without the hassles of air travel!
